Spinal Decompression in Federal Way
A non-surgical approach for disc-related back pain and sciatica
What is sciatica pain?
Sciatica refers to pain and other symptoms that travel along the path of the sciatic nerve, often from the lower back or buttock into the leg. Symptoms may include sharp, burning, or electric-like pain as well as numbness, tingling, or weakness.
Sciatic symptoms can interfere with sitting, walking, working, exercising, and other daily activities. Because several conditions can produce similar symptoms, identifying the underlying cause is an important part of determining an appropriate treatment plan.
When sciatic symptoms are associated with certain disc-related conditions, non-surgical spinal decompression may be considered as part of an individualized treatment plan. Want more of an in-depth explaination of Sciatica?

What Is Degenerative Disc Disease?
Think of the discs in your spine like small cushions between the vertebrae. Healthy spinal discs contain a high percentage of water, which helps them maintain their height and distribute forces through the spine. Over time, discs can lose hydration and undergo degenerative changes that affect their structure and function.
As a disc loses hydration and height, the space surrounding nearby spinal nerves may also change. In some cases, degenerative changes, disc bulges, or disc herniations can contribute to irritation or compression of a spinal nerve, potentially causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that travels into an arm or leg.
Disc degeneration does not always cause pain, which is why examination findings and symptoms need to be considered together. When a disc-related condition is contributing to your symptoms, treatment can be directed toward the specific problem rather than symptoms alone.
How Spinal Decompression Works
Non-surgical spinal decompression uses controlled cycles of traction and relaxation to gently reduce mechanical stress on the spine. For patients with certain disc-related conditions, treatment is directed toward the affected spinal region with the goal of reducing irritation and improving mobility.
Treatment is individualized based on your examination findings. The angle, tension, and duration are adjusted to target the involved spinal region rather than using the same settings for every patient.
Spinal decompression may be incorporated into a broader corrective-care plan alongside chiropractic care and rehabilitation when clinically appropriate.
